Dharma Talk Highlights: Venerable Fa Guang Expounds on the Lotus Sutra
AMPANG, September 6 — Sam Poh Thong had the profound blessing of hosting Venerable Fa Guang for an enlightening and structured Dharma sharing on the sacred Lotus Sutra (Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra). Held in the temple’s main shrine hall, the talk drew members of the monastic community alongside devout lay practitioners, all gathering with reverent hearts to receive the radiant wisdom of the One Vehicle (Ekayāna).
During the enriching session, Venerable Fa Guang systematically guided the assembly through the historical origins, assembly context, and overarching narrative structure of the Lotus Sutra before embarking on a lucid, chapter-by-chapter synthesis. Drawing deeply from the core sutra teachings, Venerable Fa Guang emphasized the paramount purpose of the Buddha’s appearance in this world: to open, demonstrate, awaken, and guide all sentient beings into the enlightened vision and wisdom of the Buddha (kai-shi-wu-ru). He explained that every being inherently possesses the pure seed of Buddhahood, and the Buddha’s diverse skillful means exist solely to awaken us to this supreme truth.
A major highlight of the discourse was Venerable Fa Guang’s illumination of the universally revered Universal Gate Chapter (Guanshiyin Pusa Pumen Pin). He vividly expounded on Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva’s boundless compassion, describing how the Bodhisattva observes the sounds of the world and responds unconditionally across countless forms to deliver beings from danger, suffering, and spiritual blindness. Venerable Fa Guang urged attendees to look beyond seeking external protection and to embody Guanyin Bodhisattva’s spirit within themselves by cultivating active empathy and loving-kindness in their daily interactions.
The comprehensive roadmap provided by Venerable Fa Guang offered devotees a clear, holistic perspective on this profound Mahayana scripture, demystifying its vast allegories into practical guidance for walking the Bodhisattva path. The session concluded with widespread Dharma joy, as the assembly dedicated the accumulated merits to world peace, collective harmony, and the enduring presence of the Right Dharma.
